If you are getting the Service Error: Generic message when trying to open a particular library, and the Paleo example library opens without problems, your library has become corrupt. If you are unable to recover your library using the tools in EndNote, please contact us so we can attempt to repair your library on our end. The steps below will not help if you are having this problem with a particular library.

Note: Following these steps involves modifying the registry and will remove any customizations you have made to the Reference Types in the EndNote program. When modifying the registry you may cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. If you are not comfortable modifying the registry, please contact technical support.
