CWYW 56: What are some of the issues I will encounter using EndNote X2 and later with Pages 09?

Answer: Both Apple and Thomson Reuters are committed to improving the Pages and EndNote integration. Any feedback and suggestions for future improvements can be given to Apple using their form here.The Endnote suggestion form is here.

Some of the current issues include:
  • You have modified a reference in your EndNote library, and want to update the citation in the Pages 09 document. To do this, you will need to remove the citation from the pages document and reinsert the citation.

  • If you transfer a Pages file to an iPad, the bibliography will transfer, but it will be converted to plain text. If you return the document to your Mac, any new references would be added to a new bibliography. Because of this, we do not recommend using EndNote formatted Pages documents on the iPad at this time.

  • Manage Citations does not show citations in the order they are in the document, because the list is sorted by author name. To remove a citation from one specific place in the document you would need to remove all instances of a reference, and then reinsert where you need it to go.

Note: The following issues should be resolved by the 9.0.1 iWork update. Note when the update is applied, Pages will be version 4.0.1. This can be obtained by going to the Apple menu and selecting "Software Update." If you cannot update at this time, you may use the workarounds provided here.

  • Footnotes currently do not maintain italics. At this time, we recommend manually fixing this after finishing all EndNote formatting.

  • Superscripting and Subscripting are reversed.
    1. To get around this issue, you can open the output style in EndNote X2 and reverse the superscripting and subscripting, go to the File Menu and use "Save As" to save the style with a new name. Note you can name this style with "Pages" at the end so you don't overwrite the original style.
    2. Next, go to the portion of the style where the Super/Subscript needs to be applied. This is typically either Citations/Templates or Bibliography/Templates.
    3. Highlight the text that is Superscripted or Subscripted,and go to the Edit Menu> Font. Here change Superscript text to Subscript, and Subscript to Superscript. Once you have done this in each place in the style, close and save the style.
