Import 18: Can I Direct Export from websites to EndNote Web?

Answer: Beginning with Endnote Web 2.3, it is possible to Direct Export from certain websites to EndNote Web in Firefox and Internet Explorer.



Note: other web browers, like Safari, Chrome and Opera do not support direct export at this time.



Firefox

To turn the feature on, you would need to install the latest EndNote Web Firefox installer. Use the following steps:
  1. Making sure you are logged into the EndNote Web site in a Web browser, click the Download Installers link at the bottom of any page.
  2. Under 'Firefox Extension,' click the Download Windows/Macintosh link. Note: If Firefox prevents the download, click Edit Options... to add http://myendnoteweb.com as a trusted source.
  3. Click the Install Now button when prompted to confirm software installation. Note: If Firefox prevents the download, click Edit Options... to add http://myendnoteweb.com as a trusted source.
  4. If prompted to confirm the publisher, select Run. This will launch the installation program.
  5. If prompted, select whether or not you would like EndNote Web to import direct export files from data provider web sites. Do not select EndNote Web if you wish to continue exporting references directly to EndNote, Reference Manager, or ProCite.
  6. Click the Restart Firefox button.


After restarting Firefox, you can turn Direct export on and off by going to Tools, Add-ons, selecting EndNote Web and choosing "Options". You can check (or uncheck) a box here that reads "Redirect the following MIME types for direct export files to open with EndNote Web:" .ciw .ris .ovd .enw. [OK].

Internet Explorer
To turn the feature on, you would need to install the latest EndNote Web installer. Use the following steps: To download and install the Cite While You WriteTM plug-in to use with Word or Internet Explorer toolbar for Windows:
  1. Log in to the local machine with administrative rights or as a user with program installation privileges.
  2. If an older version of the plug-in is installed, follow the uninstall instructions.
  3. Close all open windows of Microsoft® Word® and Outlook®.
  4. Making sure you are logged into the EndNote Web site in a Web browser, click the Download Installers link at the bottom of any page.
  5. Click the Download Windows link to save the EndNoteWeb.exe installer to your computer.
  6. Click the Run button, or Open depending on your browser, when prompted in the 'Download Complete' window. This will launch the installation program.
  7. If prompted to confirm the publisher, select Run.
  8. If prompted, select whether or not you would like EndNote Web to import direct export files from data provider web sites. Do not select EndNote Web if you wish to continue exporting references directly to EndNote, Reference Manager, or ProCite.
  9. Continue with the installation.
  10. On the Set Server screen, select the type of EndNote Web server account you will be using.
    Default - Select default if you are accessing EndNote Web through www.myendnoteweb.com or myendnoteweb.com.
    Advanced - If you are accessing some other EndNote Web server location where the EndNote Web homepage address does not match the subscription address above, select this server option.
  11. To verify the installation of Cite While You Write, open Word and look for the Cite While You Write toolbar.
  12. To verify the installation of the Internet Explorer toolbar, open Internet Explorer and look for the EndNote Web toolbar. If it is not visible, select the View menu, Toolbars and check EndNote Web.
