8:
After installing, when opening EndNote 8 or later an error message comes up. The window's title is "Software\ISI ResearchSoft\EndNote\Preferences", and the content of the window is all boxes or filled with chinese characters. How can I fix this? |

Answer:
The message would look like the following:

This is due to permissions settings in the Windows registry. Following these steps involves modifying the registry and will remove any customizations you have made to the Reference Types in the EndNote program. When modifying the registry you may cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. If you are not comfortable modifying the registry yourself, please contact technical support and we can help walk you through the process.
- Quit all applications.
- Go to Start in the lower left hand side of you monitor and then select Run and enter regedit. Then click OK.
- Select the HKEY_CURRENT_USER folder and expand it, then the Software folder, then highlight the ISI ResearchSoft folder.
- Next, right-click on the ISI ResearchSoft key, click "Permissions", and in the permissions dialog box click the "Advanced" button at the bottom.
- Here, go to the "Owner" tab, and set your account as the Owner, and select the option to "Replace owner on subcontainers and objects".
You should now be able to use the EndNote program without getting the error message.
If you continue to have problems, try the following:
- Quit all applications.
- Go to Start in the lower left hand side of you monitor and then select Run and enter regedit. Then click OK.
- Select the HKEY_CURRENT_USER folder and expand it, then the Software folder, then highlight the ISI ResearchSoft folder.
- Next, right-click on the ISI ResearchSoft key, click "Permissions", and in the permissions dialog box click the "Advanced" button at the bottom.
- Make sure that your name is listed here, if it is make sure you are set to "Full Control" and check the "Replace Permissions Entries on all Child Objects..." box, then click Apply.
- If you are not listed here, click the Add button, type your name in the box provided and click "Check Names" to find your profile (you may need just your first or just your last name). Once you've found your name, set yourself to Allow Full Control, which will Allow all the other checkboxes as well, and click OK.
- Then click OK to any open windows and close out of the registry editor, and you should be able to start EndNote without problems.
