Import 17: When Direct Exporting from ProQuest, my results have the author name scrambled. How can I correct this?

Answer:

ProQuest has not configured their Direct Export properly, and they have configured the authors improperly in their export.

Authors in ProQuest's direct export file look like:
John Smith
rather than:
Smith, John
The latter is required by the Direct Export format.
ProQuest has a product suggestion page where you can let them know you would like them to correct their format here.

Workaround

  1. Do not use the Direct Export option "Export directly to ProCite, EndNote or Reference Manager."
  2. Use the option to "Download in a format compatible with ProCite, EndNote, Reference Manager and RefWorks."
  3. This will display a Web page of results you can save in the web browser.
  4. This can be imported properly using the ProQuest Import Filter which is set to parse the author names, first then last.
