Import 15: When submitting a grant to the NIH, they require that the PMC number be included for all references. How do I do this?

Answer: The NIH has revised their policy for submissions to require the PubMed Central reference number be included in documents submitted to the NIH.

Note: No content files can update libraries that already exist in EndNote, so PMC numbers will only be added to new references automatically, if the references have PMC numbers on the PubMed site at the time of import.

Note: EndNote X3 and later come with updated files that import the PMC number to the PMC field automatically. There is no need to update these files using the steps below with X3 or later.

The content files provided here place the PMC number in the Custom 2 field for the Journal Articles. Updated EndNote content files are included here.

Unzip the attached files and place the files in the appropriate location as noted below.

EndNote X2
  1. Windows: Go to the Edit Menu and choose Preferences.
    Mac OS X: Go to the EndNote Menu and choose Preferences.
  2. Go to the "Reference Type" option, and click the "Import" button.
  3. Select the "Pubmed_PMCID-X2.xml" file and click the "Open" button.
  4. Double-click on the NIH.ens (Style) file to open it. In EndNote X2, go to the "File Menu" and choose "Save as"
    Change the file name from
    "NIH Copy"
    to
    "NIH"
    Click "Save."
  5. Double-click on the PubMed (NLM).enz (Connection) file to open it. In EndNote X2, go to the "File Menu" and choose "Save as"
    Change the file name from
    "PubMed (NLM) Copy"
    to
    "PubMed (NLM)"
    Click "Save."
  6. Double-click on the PubMed (NLM).enf (Filter) file to open it. In EndNote X2, go to the "File Menu" and choose "Save as"
    Change the file name from
    "PubMed (NLM) Copy"
    to
    "PubMed (NLM)"
    Click "Save."

EndNote X1
  1. Windows: Go to the Edit Menu and choose Preferences.
    Mac OS X: Go to the EndNote X1 Menu and choose Preferences.
  2. Go to the "Reference Type" option, and click the "Import" button.
  3. Select the "Pubmed_PMCID-X1.xml" file and click the "Open" button.
  4. Copy the NIH.ens (Style) file to:
    Windows
    C:\Program Files\EndNote X1\Styles
    Mac OS X
    Applications:EndNote X1:Styles

  5. Copy the PubMed (NLM).enz (Connection) file to:
    Windows
    C:\Program Files\EndNote X1\Connections
    Mac OS X
    Applications:EndNote X1:Connections

  6. Copy the PubMed (NLM).enf (Filter) file to:
    Windows
    C:\Program Files\EndNote X1\Filters
    Mac OS X
    Applications:EndNote X1:Filters

Endnote X and earlier
  1. Windows: Go to the Edit Menu and choose Preferences.
    Mac OS X: Go to the EndNote Menu and choose Preferences.
  2. Go to the "Reference Type" option, and click the "Modify Reference Types" button.
  3. Make sure the Reference Type: at the top of the screen is set to "Journal Article" and scroll down so you see the "Generic" field "Custom 2"
  4. Add the name "PMCID" next to "Custom 2".

  5. Click ok on the Modify Reference Types screen and close the Preferences window.
  6. Copy the NIH.ens (Style) file to:
    Windows
    C:\Program Files\EndNote (your version number)\Styles
    Mac OS X
    Applications:EndNote (your version number):Styles
  7. Copy the PubMed (NLM).enz (Connection) file to:
    Windows
    C:\Program Files\EndNote (your version number)\Connections
    Mac OS X
    Applications:EndNote (your version number):Connections
  8. Copy the PubMed (NLM).enf (Filter) file to:
    Windows
    C:\Program Files\EndNote (your version number)\Filters
    Mac OS X
    Applications:EndNote (your version number):Filters
