2:
When I try to insert a selected reference in Word with EndNote 8.0.2 on Windows,
I get an error message, "An attempt was made to access an unnamed file past its end",
and the citation does not insert properly. How can I fix this? |
Answer:
This is due to a problem with the addin files for EndNote that are currently
in your Word startup folder. To fix this, you need to replace the existing files
with a fresh copy from your EndNote 8 folder, by doing the following:
- Close
Word and Outlook if running.
- Open Computer (called "My Computer" on 2000 and XP) and locate your EndNote folder. The default installation
path is “C:\Program Files\EndNote 8”.
- There are two files in this folder you need to copy, depending
on which version of Word you are using...
For Word 2000, use EN8CWYW.dot and EN8Cwyw.wll.
For Word XP/2003/2007 use EN8CWYW.dot and EN8Cwyw.WordXP.wll
If you do not see the .wll and .dot file extensions, go to the
Tools menu and select Folder Options / View tab. Uncheck the box
that reads “Hide file extensions for known file types” and click
OK. Hold down the ALT key on Vista if you do not see the "Tools" menu.
- Locate
the Word Startup folder, remove the existing EndNote 8 addin files
currently present (as well as any ~$ temp files you may find), and
paste these two files into this folder.
If you cannot find the specified folder, your Windows preferences
may be set to hide the folder. In the folder go to Tools
/ Folder Options / View tab and make sure that "Show hidden files
and folders" is selected. Hold down the ALT key on Vista if you do not see the "Tools" menu.
Note: On Windows 2000 or XP systems, Word needs these CWYW files to be located in:
C:\Documents and Settings\your login\Application Data\Microsoft\Word\Startup
On a Vista system, Word needs these CWYW files to be located in:
C:\Users\your login\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Word\Startup
- Launch
Microsoft Word.
When
you attempt to insert a selected reference using the tools in Word,
you should no longer get the error.
If the above directions do not resolve your problem, you may need to recreate the EndNote 8 preferences on your machine. Following these steps involves modifying the registry and will remove any customizations you have made to the Reference Types in the EndNote program. When modifying the registry you may cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. If you are not comfortable modifying the registry yourself, please contact technical support and we can walk you through the process.
- Quit all applications.
- Open the My Computer option (from the Start Menu or on your desktop) and then go to C:\Documents and Settings\<Your User Name>\Application Data and delete the EndNote folder. (Note: If you cannot find the specified folder your windows preferences may be set to hide the folder. In Windows Explorer go to Tools / Folder Options / View tab and make sure that "Show hidden files and folders" is selected.).
- Go to Start in the lower left hand side of you monitor and then select Run and enter regedit. Then click OK.
- Select the HKEY_CURRENT_USER folder and expand it, then the Software folder, then the ISI ResearchSoft folder.
- Click on the EndNote folder.
- Select Registry (or File) in the menu and then select the Export option.
- Under Export Range choose the Selected Branch option and then save the file as EndNoteReg.
- Right click on the EndNote folder and select Delete.
- Close the Regedit application.
- Restart the computer.
- Open EndNote and try again.
