CWYW 14: After using Track Changes in my document, the document won't format properly, or I'm getting errors with the tools in this document, such as "The requested object could not be found". What can I do to resolve this?

Answer: The EndNote 8 and earlier CWYW tools are not compatible with Word's Track Changes feature. To resolve this problem in your document, you must accept or reject all the changes that have been made and turn off the Track Changes feature. As this may have an impact on the content of the document, depending on the changes that you will be accepting or rejecting, you'll want to first make a backup of your document to be on the safe side.

Note: EndNote 9 and later do not have a conflict with Track Changes in Word when not viewing the "Final Showing Markup" format- the "Final" format works without errors, so the following steps would not be necessary for EndNote 9 or later users.

To accept or reject the changes:

In Word 2007/2010, go to the "Reviewing" ribbon. Click on The "Track Changes" button until it is not highlighted in a different color than the standard background color. Use the "Changes" area of the ribbon to Accept or Reject all the changes in the document.

In Windows with Word 97 or Word 2000, go to "Tools > Track Changes > Accept or Reject Changes" and choose to Accept All or Reject All, or work through the changes individually.

In Windows with Word XP/2002 or Word 2003, you must first make sure the Reviewing toolbar is active by going to "View > Toolbars". Once you ensure that the Reviewing toolbar is active, look for the following icons:

The "Final Showing Markup" section may say "Final", "Original Showing Markup", or "Original" instead. Once you have located this group of icons, you can use the icon with a checkmark over it to accept changes, or the icon with the x over it to reject changes.

On a Mac with Word X or Word 2004, go to "Tools > Track Changes > Accept or Reject Changes" and choose to Accept All or Reject All, or work through the changes individually.

To turn off the Track Changes feature in your document:

At the very bottom of the document window, where the page number and section number are displayed, you should see four three-letter words, listed as "REC", "TRK", "EXT" and "OVR". An example is shown below:

If the TRK option is in black text as shown in the example, then Track Changes is currently enabled. On a Mac, the box next to TRK would be selected. You should be able to turn off Track Changes by double-clicking the TRK text in Windows, or by deselecting the TRK box on a Mac. Once the TRK is in gray text instead of black text on Windows, or deselected on a Mac, the Track Changes feature has been turned off. If you have accepted or rejected all the changes in the document and turned off Track Changes, you should be able to work with EndNote on your document again without running into this problem.
