CWYW 24: If I start a document using the EndNote Desktop program, can I continue working with the document using EndNote Web?

Answer: You can do this, but there are a few things you will want to keep in mind:
  • If you are using the EndNote X or later Cite While You Write (CWYW) tools, you will need to swap to the EndNote Web (CWYW) tools. Click here for instructions.

  • You need to make sure you have all the references in your EndNote Web folder from your EndNote Desktop library. Click here for directions on how to transfer your references from EndNote Desktop to EndNote Web.

  • If you unformat the citations in your document and then format again, you may receive a dialog that reads “EndNote Web Select Matching Reference.” Click here for directions on resolving this.

  • If Instant Formatting is enabled, you will be prompted to open your EndNote Desktop library after inserting a citation using EndNote Web if the document was last formatted using EndNote 8 or 9. If you unformat the citations and format again using EndNote Web, you will not be prompted for the Desktop application again.

  • You may receive the error message “Server execution failed.” if you start a document using the EndNote 8 Desktop application and then insert a citation using EndNote Web. If this happens, the citation will insert. Click Ok to close the error message and unformat the citations using EndNote Web. Format the citations again using the EndNote Web Format Bibliography command, and you should be able to continue using the document as normal.

Note: We have tested these scenarios using the currently supported versions of EndNote. We cannot say for certain if you will be able to perform the same steps properly with earlier, unsupported versions.
