EndNote X5
EndNote X5 is compatible with Lion, however the short time between the Lion release in July and EndNote X5 in September did not provide adequate time to take advantage of new OS features. These will be addressed in future versions.
EndNote X4, X3 and X2
EndNote X4, X3 and X2 are not officially compatible with Mac OS X 10.7 Lion. We are testing EndNote X4, X3 and X2 with Lion to determine informal compatibility and will report any exceptions found. Customer reports have been positive thus far, with the following exception.
On Mac OS X 10.7 Lion systems, the Find Full Text feature in EndNote X2, X3 and X4 crashes, and it does not retrieve any full text references. This is a known issue at this time with no resolution except to use EndNote X5, which does not crash when using the Find Full Text option in an EndNote Library.
We will continue to update this page should any other issues be discovered. Note that very old versions of EndNote (9 and earlier) will not install on Mac OS X 10.7 Lion systems as they require Rosetta, which is not included in 10.7.

Snow Leopard 10.6 Compatibility News
EndNote X4 is compatible with Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard.
We have informally tested EndNote X1, X2 and X3 with Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard, and have received reports from many customers using Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard.
We will continue to update this page should any additional issues be discovered.
Note that all Leopard (10.5) compatibility notes (below) also apply to 10.6.
Word 2008 and 10.6
We have identified an issue where quitting Word 2008 with the EndNote tools loaded causes Word to crash. This issue is isolated to EndNote, Word 2008, and Mac OS X 10.6. We are actively working to find a more permanent solution with our partners at Apple and Microsoft to resolve this issue.
As the crash happens as Word is closing after all data has been saved, we do not anticipate any data loss due to this issue.
To avoid this crash, you can do the following before quitting Word:
- Go to the "Tools" menu, choose "Templates and Add-ins..."
- Uncheck "EndNote CWYW Commands.dot" and "EndNote CWYW Word 2008.bundle."
- Quit Word. When you restart, the EndNote tools should load again.
Pages, multi-byte, and Snow Leopard issue:
Apple has released an upgrade to Pages '09, included in the iWork 9.0.3 update that addresses compatibility issues users of 10.6 and EndNote and Pages had experienced.
"Fixes an issue with saving documents with EndNote citations containing multi-byte characters when using Mac OS 10.6."
Note: This fix may not correct all documents affected by this issue using Pages prior to the patch. You may need to restore from a backup copy of those documents if that is the case.
This update should be installed from the Apple menu, Software Updates before working with EndNote, Pages and 10.6. It is also available here. |
Leopard 10.5 Compatibility News
EndNote X2 and later
EndNote X2 was designed after the release of Leopard, and it was designed to work with this operating system. There are no known compatibility issues affecting EndNote X2 and Mac OS X 10.5.
EndNote X1
There are no known compatibility issues with EndNote X1 and Leopard with the 10.5.2 and later versions of Leopard.
EndNote X
There are no known compatibility issues affecting EndNote X.
EndNote 9
Due to major compatibility issues, it is not recommend to run EndNote 9 or earlier on OS X 10.5.
- It is not possible to use the "Connect" option reliably.
- EndNote 9 will not import text files formatted in many standard direct export formats.
There are no workarounds for these issues.EndNote 9 and earlier versions will not be updated for Leopard compatibility.To work with EndNote and Leopard, contact Sales for an upgrade to the current version of EndNote.
EndNote 8 and earlier
EndNote versions prior to version 9 were no longer supported at the time of the OS X 10.5 release.
Note that the issues reported above for EndNote 9 may affect older versions of EndNote as well.
